Where it started

Firm History

Coghlan Kelly Solicitors has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the 1880s. The firm was originally established by Edward Ahern, who was both a solicitor and an agricultural machinery producer. Eventually, Ahern became more interested in the machinery production side of things and decided to concentrate entirely on that business.

In and around 1914, a man by the name of James P Coghlan came from Cork and started working for Ahern, eventually taking over the firm in circa 1919 and practicing in town.

Over time, two of Coghlan’s sons became solicitors, and James D Coghlan continued to practice at the firm after his father’s death until 1986. It was in that year, solicitor Martin Lawlor took over the practice, becoming the new owner.

The other half of this story is that, in approximately 1912 two cousins, Kelly and Crotty, established a separate law firm called Kelly Crotty. Thomas J. Kelly became the sole proprietor of that firm after Crotty left, and his son Simon Kelly took over after him. Similarly, after Simon’s death, his son Tom Kelly took over, and the firm continued to operate as Thomas J. Kelly and son until 2005. In that year, the firm of James P Coghlan & Co. merged with Thomas J. Kelly & Son, forming Coghlan Kelly Solicitors.

With over 140 years of history in providing legal services to clients in New Ross, South Wexford, South Carlow, Southeast Kilkenny, and East Kilkenny areas, Coghlan Kelly Solicitors has established itself as a trusted and reliable legal resource in the community.

Currently, the owners and partners of the firm are Martin Lawlor, Eric Furlong and Orlagh Wafer, who continue to provide exceptional legal services to their clients with the same level of dedication and expertise that the firm has become known for over many years.
